Optometrists are very important eye doctors. They are the main providers of eye care. Optometrists do it all - from giving complete eye examinations to diagnosing vision problems to providing treatment such as prescribing eyeglasses and low-vision rehabilitation. Doctors of optometry (OD's) must graduate from an accredited college of Optometry and must obtain a State license administered by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Optometrists should not be mistaken with other types of eye doctors such as opticians (dispense prescriptions written by optometrists and ophthalmologists) and ophthalmologists (similar to optometrists only they perform eye surgeries too).
